Build quality and battery life
1. Apple: the best-built laptops, and the most reliable
Apple came first in BGR's reliability ranking, top in Consumer Reports' survey and second in PCMag's. BGR's own summary is that MacBooks are the usual recommendation for longevity. They're made from aluminium, they stay feeling solid, and because Apple designs its own M-series chips, battery life is long and the fans (where there are any) rarely spin up. The MacBook Air has no fan at all, so it's silent whatever you're doing.

2. Lenovo: the widest range, from Chromebooks to ThinkPads
Lenovo is one of the world's biggest laptop makers. Whatever you want to spend and whatever you need, there's a Lenovo range aimed squarely at it. The ThinkPad, which Lenovo bought from IBM in 2005, still has a strong keyboard reputation and is built to survive years of being carried around.
