You can stare at spec sheets until your eyes glaze over, but they won’t tell you if a laptop actually delivers when you’re three hours into a gaming session or trying to finish a render before a deadline. That’s why I’ve spent several weeks properly living with the ASUS ROG Strix 16 Gaming Laptop, pushing it through everything from competitive gaming to content creation work.

This isn’t just another gaming laptop. ASUS has packed in AMD’s latest Ryzen 9 8940HX processor alongside NVIDIA’s RTX 5070Ti with 12GB of GDDR7 memory. That’s flagship-level hardware, and at £2,159.99, it sits firmly in premium territory. But does it justify that price tag?

The lid has a brushed metal finish that resists fingerprints better than glossy alternatives (thank goodness). There’s RGB lighting, obviously, because this is a ROG product. You can turn it off if you’re taking this into an office, which I did. Nobody needs rainbow waves during a Teams meeting.

This isn’t a laptop for frequent travellers. It’ll fit in a standard backpack, but between the laptop and that massive charger, you’re carrying over 3kg. Perfect for moving between home and office, less ideal for daily train commutes.

The panel is a 16-inch Full HD+ (1920 x 1200) IPS display with a 16:10 aspect ratio. That extra vertical space is brilliant for productivity work. When I’m not gaming, I’ve got Google Docs open, and having those extra pixels means less scrolling.

I’ve been testing this with a mix of games and creative work. Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing maxed out? Easily 90+ fps at 1080p with DLSS 3 enabled. The frame generation tech in DLSS 3 is genuinely impressive. Even demanding titles like Alan Wake 2 run beautifully.

For content creation, I’ve been rendering 4K video in DaVinci Resolve. What used to take 15 minutes on my old laptop now takes about 6. That’s the difference those 16 cores make. Photoshop runs like a dream, even with massive files and dozens of layers open.

The CPU hits 92°C under sustained load, which sounds scary but is within spec for this chip. I never experienced thermal throttling during my testing. The keyboard deck stays comfortable, but the bottom gets properly hot. Don’t use this on your lap during a gaming session unless you enjoy toasted thighs.

Under load, the fans are properly loud. I measured 52dB during a Cyberpunk session, which is about the level of a normal conversation. It’s not annoying or high-pitched, just… loud. You’ll definitely want headphones for gaming. The good news? During light work, the fans are barely audible. I’ve used this in coffee shops without feeling self-conscious.

Three USB-A ports means you won’t need a dongle for your mouse, external drive, and whatever else. The 2.5Gb Ethernet is overkill for most people but appreciated. HDMI 2.1 supports 4K at 120Hz, perfect for external monitors. No Thunderbolt because this is an AMD platform, but the USB-C port does support DisplayPort for external displays. No SD card reader, which is annoying for photographers.

The 720p webcam is rubbish by 2026 standards. It’s adequate for Teams calls, but don’t expect miracles. The microphones are decent though. I’ve done several video calls, and nobody complained about audio quality.

Speakers are surprisingly good for a gaming laptop. They get loud without distorting, though bass is basically non-existent. Fine for YouTube or casual listening, but you’ll want headphones for gaming or music.

At this price point, you’re paying for modern hardware that won’t feel outdated in three years. The RTX 5070Ti alone is a significant upgrade over last-gen cards, and that Ryzen 9 processor is genuinely fast. It’s expensive, but the performance justifies it.
