You’re not just shopping for speed specs on a spreadsheet – you need official Sony compatibility, the right heatsink design, and performance that actually delivers in real-world gaming. After several weeks with the WD_BLACK SN850P 2TB, I can tell you exactly where it sits in this crowded field and whether it’s worth the premium price tag.

The 2TB capacity is the sweet spot for most people. You can install around 50 games (obviously depends on the titles – Call of Duty will eat up way more space than indie games). The 1TB version feels a bit cramped if you play a lot of AAA titles, whilst the 4TB model is brilliant but costs an absolute fortune.

That official licensing matters more than you might think. Sony’s been pretty good about third-party drives so far, but having that official stamp means you’re not gambling on future firmware updates potentially causing issues. It’s the difference between “this should work” and “this is guaranteed to work”.

Right, let’s talk about what this actually means when you’re playing games. I tested this drive extensively with Spider-Man 2 because it’s one of the most demanding titles for storage performance. Is that worth it? Depends on your priorities. If you’re the sort of person who researches everything, reads compatibility lists, and doesn’t mind a bit of measuring and fitting, you can save money going the DIY route. But if you just want to buy something, install it, and know it’ll work perfectly now and in the future, the premium pricing makes sense.
