16GB is the practical minimum for most developers using modern IDEs, a browser and a local development server simultaneously. If you work with Docker containers, virtual machines or data science tools like Jupyter Notebook with large datasets, 24GB or more is worthwhile. 8GB is insufficient for comfortable professional development work and will cause slowdowns when running multiple tools.

For most web developers, Python programmers and JavaScript developers, ARM Windows laptops work well in 2025, with broad tool compatibility and excellent battery life. However, some legacy enterprise tools, specific Docker configurations and certain native binaries may require x86 emulation, which reduces performance. Always verify your specific toolchain's ARM compatibility before purchasing an ARM Windows laptop.

For most developers, integrated graphics are perfectly adequate. A dedicated GPU becomes important if you are working in machine learning, computer vision, GPU-accelerated simulation or game development, where CUDA or similar GPU compute frameworks are required. For web development, backend development, mobile development and most software engineering roles, the GPU is not a meaningful factor.

At minimum, look for 1920x1080 (Full HD) on screens up to 14 inches. Higher resolutions such as 2560x1600 or 2880x1800 render text noticeably more crisply, which reduces eye strain during long coding sessions. IPS panels offer good colour accuracy and wide viewing angles, while AMOLED displays provide the best contrast. Avoid TN panels, which have poorer colour accuracy and narrower viewing angles.

Windows 11 Home is sufficient for most developers. Windows 11 Pro adds Hyper-V (for running virtual machines natively), BitLocker drive encryption and Remote Desktop hosting, which are useful for some professional and enterprise development workflows. If you rely on Hyper-V for local virtualisation or need BitLocker for security compliance, Pro is worth having, as on the Dell XPS 13 9345 and MSI Raider.
