Thunderbolt 4

A high-speed connection standard that combines data transfer, video output, and power delivery in one cable. Thunderbolt 4 reaches up to 40 Gbps and works with USB-C connectors.

Also known as: thunderbolt 4 port, thunderbolt 4 cable, tb4, intel thunderbolt 4

Thunderbolt 4 is a universal connectivity standard developed by Intel (and supported by Apple, Dell, and others) that lets you plug a single cable into your device to transfer data, display video, and charge batteries all at once.

The technology uses a USB-C connector shape but offers far greater bandwidth than standard USB-C. Thunderbolt 4 reaches speeds of up to 40 Gbps, which is roughly four times faster than Thunderbolt 3 and sufficient for transferring large video files, external hard drives, and 4K displays without slowdown.

Real-world example: you can connect a Thunderbolt 4 dock to your laptop and simultaneously charge it, display video to a monitor, and access an external SSD at full speed through a single connection.

When shopping, look for the Thunderbolt bolt symbol (not just a USB-C logo) on cables and devices to confirm genuine Thunderbolt 4 support. Some laptops and desktops now include one or more Thunderbolt 4 ports. If you work with video editing, photography, or large file transfers, Thunderbolt 4 can be noticeably faster than standard USB-C alternatives. However, peripherals must also support Thunderbolt 4 to take advantage of the full speed.

Thunderbolt 4 remains backward compatible with older Thunderbolt 3 devices, though they will operate at their original (slower) speeds. This compatibility matters if you already own Thunderbolt 3 cables or hubs.
