Operating System

The core software that manages your device's hardware and lets you run applications. It handles tasks like file storage, memory, security, and how programs communicate with your device.

Also known as: OS, operating system software, system software

An operating system (OS) is the fundamental software layer between you and your device's hardware. It controls everything from how your processor allocates power to how your keyboard input reaches the right application.

Common operating systems include Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Each provides a different user interface and set of tools, but they all do the same job: manage resources, run programmes, and keep things secure.

Why it matters: Your OS determines which apps you can install, how fast your device feels, what security features are available, and how easily you can repair or upgrade hardware. A bloated OS consumes RAM and battery life. A well-optimised one feels snappy even on older devices.

Key things the OS does:

  • Manages files and storage
  • Controls memory allocation between programmes
  • Handles device drivers so hardware works correctly
  • Enforces security and user permissions
  • Provides the interface you see on screen

What to watch for: Not all devices let you choose or replace their OS. Phones often lock you into one (iOS on Apple, Android on most others). Some older devices stop receiving OS updates, which becomes a security risk. Newer OS versions sometimes demand more processing power, making older devices feel sluggish.

When buying tech, check whether the OS is up to date, how long it will receive security patches, and whether you can actually repair or upgrade it yourself.
