I’ve tested enough laptops to know that a fancy spec sheet doesn’t guarantee a good experience. What matters is whether the keyboard holds up after hours of typing, whether the fans sound like a jet engine during video calls, and whether the battery actually lasts through a workday. The ACEMAGIC Gaming Laptop sits in that tricky mid-range space where you’re not quite sure what you’re getting.

Over three weeks of testing, I used this machine for everything from writing reviews to editing photos, running browser tabs (too many, honestly), and yes, trying some light gaming. It’s a proper workhorse for everyday tasks, but calling it a gaming laptop sets the wrong expectations.

The hinges are fine but require two hands to open, which is typical at this price. They hold the screen steady enough, though there’s a tiny wobble when you’re typing on a train. Not a dealbreaker, just something you notice.

Weight-wise, at 1.8kg, it’s not exactly portable. Add the chunky power brick and you’re looking at over 2kg in your bag. This is a desk laptop that occasionally travels, not a daily commuter.

This laptop lives best on a desk. The 16-inch screen is brilliant for productivity but makes it awkward in coffee shops. The charger takes up serious bag space too.

Colour reproduction is acceptable but not impressive. If you’re doing serious photo editing, you’ll want something better. For watching Netflix or working on presentations, it’s absolutely fine. The bezels are chunky by 2026 standards, giving it a slightly dated look.

Gaming? Well, that’s where the marketing gets ahead of reality. The integrated Radeon graphics can handle older titles like CS:GO or League of Legends at medium settings. I tried Fortnite and got playable frame rates on low settings, but this isn’t the gaming experience most people expect when they see “gaming laptop” on the box.

For what it’s designed to do – Office work, web browsing, light photo editing, video streaming – it’s more than capable. The 16GB RAM helps with multitasking, and the fact you can upgrade to 64GB is brilliant for future-proofing.

The trackpad is functional but nothing special. It’s a bit smaller than I’d like for a 16-inch laptop, and two-finger scrolling occasionally stutters. Palm rejection works most of the time. I found myself reaching for a mouse more often than I do with better trackpads.

Charging is reasonably quick with the 65W adapter, but there’s no USB-C charging option. That means you’re carrying the proprietary charger everywhere, which is annoying in 2026 when most decent laptops support USB-C Power Delivery.

The laptop doesn’t throttle under sustained load, which is good. But the underside gets properly warm during intensive tasks. I wouldn’t recommend using this on your lap for extended periods. On a desk with decent airflow, it’s fine.

The fans aren’t particularly annoying, just audible. In a quiet library, you’ll notice them during video calls. In a normal office or at home with background noise, they fade into the background. Not silent, but not jet-engine loud either.

The port placement is sensible, with most connections on the right side keeping cables out of the way if you use a mouse on the right. WiFi 6 performance has been solid throughout testing, with no dropouts in my home office.

The USB-C port supports data and display output but not charging, which is frustrating. I tried several USB-C chargers and none worked. You’re stuck with the barrel connector.

Speakers are typical budget laptop fare. They’re bottom-mounted, so sound quality depends on what surface the laptop sits on. Music sounds tinny and lacks bass. For YouTube videos and video calls, they’re fine. For anything else, use headphones.

Compared to similarly priced options from HP, the ACEMAGIC offers better performance and more RAM out of the box. But HP laptops typically have better build quality and customer support in the UK.

The 16GB of DDR4 RAM can be upgraded to 64GB if you need it for heavy multitasking or virtual machines. The 512GB NVMe SSD can be swapped for a larger drive, and there’s a second M.2 slot for additional storage. This level of upgradeability is increasingly rare in 2026, especially at this price point.

For students or home users who might want to extend the laptop’s life in a few years, this is brilliant. Chuck in more RAM or a bigger SSD and you’ve got a refreshed machine without buying new.

The ACEMAGIC offers reasonable value if you prioritize the right things. The 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, and Ryzen 7 processor are solid specs for the money. The 16-inch screen is genuinely useful for productivity.

But the weak battery, plastic build, and misleading gaming branding count against it. You’re essentially paying for specs and screen size while accepting compromises everywhere else.
