MSI PRO MP161 Portable Monitor Review: Compact Display Solution for Professionals and Gamers

You can’t carry your 27-inch desktop monitor to a café. And laptop screens alone don’t cut it when you need proper workspace on the move. I’ve tested the MSI PRO MP161 for about a month, taking it to co-working spaces, hotel rooms, and even a mate’s place for a gaming session. The question isn’t whether portable monitors exist (they do, plenty of them). It’s whether this specific 15.6-inch panel delivers enough quality to justify the desk space and the investment.

The 60Hz refresh rate tells you everything about MSI’s target market here. This isn’t a gaming-first portable monitor. It’s a productivity tool that happens to work for casual gaming. And that’s fine. Most laptops output 60Hz anyway when you’re working on battery.

The IPS glow is noticeable in dark scenes, especially in dimly lit environments. That’s not a defect, just the reality of budget IPS technology. If you’re working in a bright office or café, you won’t notice. If you’re watching films in a dark hotel room, the grey blacks will annoy you.

Colour reproduction is adequate. It’s not calibrated, and it’s not trying to be. MSI doesn’t claim this is a professional monitor. For email, spreadsheets, and web browsing, colours look natural enough. For photo editing? Absolutely not.

Response times are slow by gaming standards. Fast camera movements in first-person games show visible trailing. For slower-paced games or productivity work, it’s not an issue. The lack of overdrive modes means you can’t tune this, but at least there’s minimal overshoot.

I tested this with Counter-Strike 2 and the motion blur was immediately obvious. But when I switched to working on a document or browsing the web, I didn’t notice any issues. That’s the trade-off with portable monitors in the budget tier. They prioritise size and weight over gaming performance.

There’s no HDR here, and that’s fine. At this price point and size, proper HDR would be impossible anyway. The 250-nit brightness is adequate for indoor use but struggles in bright environments.

The lack of adaptive sync means you’ll see screen tearing if your frame rate isn’t locked to 60fps. And the poor contrast makes dark scenes in games look washed out. This isn’t a gaming monitor. It’s a productivity monitor that can handle casual gaming when needed.

Build quality is decent. It’s all plastic, but it doesn’t feel cheap. The bezels are slim (about 5mm), which looks modern. MSI includes a protective case that doubles as a stand, which is handy. The whole thing weighs about 800g, light enough to carry daily.

There’s also a Mini HDMI port, but MSI doesn’t include the cable. You’ll need to buy a Mini HDMI to HDMI cable separately if you want to use this with older devices or gaming consoles. That’s a bit annoying.

No built-in speakers. There’s a 3.5mm audio jack, so you can plug in headphones or external speakers. For a portable monitor, I’d have liked to see basic speakers included, even if they were rubbish. Sometimes you just need audio without carrying separate speakers.

What the MSI offers is a lower price point whilst maintaining acceptable image quality. If you’re buying your first portable monitor and aren’t sure how much you’ll use it, this is a sensible starting point.

The value proposition here is straightforward. You’re getting a functional portable monitor that does the basics well without costing much. It’s not exciting. It won’t blow you away. But it’ll sit next to your laptop and display your spreadsheets without fuss.

Compare this to desktop monitors in the same price bracket and you’ll see the portability premium. For similar money, you could get a 24-inch desktop monitor with better image quality. But you can’t carry that in your laptop bag.
