This one's for tall people. The SONGMICS OBG077B11's seat starts at 53 cm and goes up to 65, and SONGMICS recommends it for users between 165 and 190 cm. Below that range, the seat height alone makes it a poor bet, however good the price looks. Shorter readers will do better with our guide to gaming chairs for petite people.
Start with your legs
The seat adjusts from 53 to 65 cm. To see where you'd land, measure from the floor to the back of your knee in the shoes you normally wear. That's roughly the seat height that gives you flat feet and level thighs. If it comes to less than 53 cm, even the lowest setting leaves your feet dangling and the front edge pressing into your legs.
The seat is deep as well as high: 53 cm from backrest to front edge, and 54 cm wide. That suits long thighs; on shorter ones the front edge is likely to reach behind the knee.
| Quick numbers | Figure |
|---|---|
| Seat height | 53 to 65 cm |
| Recommended user | 165 to 190 cm; 60 to 100 kg |
| Seat | 54 cm wide x 53 cm deep |
| Cushion | 11.5 cm high-density foam, 30 kg/m3 |
| Armrests | 71 to 83 cm from the floor |
| Recline | 90 to 135 degrees, stepless |
| Maximum load | 150 kg |

The desk problem
A tall seat needs a tall desk. A typical desk is somewhere around 72 to 76 cm high, and with this seat near the top of its range there's little room for your legs underneath. Check yours; at an ordinary desk the bottom of the range is where you're likely to sit.
The armrests make it tighter. They sit 71 cm off the floor with the seat at its lowest and rise to 83 cm with it, staying about 18 cm above the cushion. Against a 72 cm desk that's very little clearance, and less again as the seat goes up. If you like to sit pulled right in, measure under your desk first. A sit-stand desk raised a few centimetres solves it.
Which weight figure to believe
The chair carries a 150 kg maximum load, but SONGMICS's recommended user weight is 60 to 100 kg. The second number is the one to shop by. At 120 kg you'd be inside the limit but outside SONGMICS's recommendation; our guide to gaming chairs for heavy people is a better starting point.
Foam, with numbers
SONGMICS gives both a thickness and a density for this cushion: 11.5 cm of high-density foam at 30 kg/m3, plus a "70D" label it doesn't explain. Denser foam generally flattens more slowly, but there's no durability test to go with the figure, so nobody can yet say how it holds up after a year.
Leatherette (or suede, or velvet)
This Ink Black version is PU faux leather. It wipes clean, and SONGMICS calls it wear-resistant, but PU doesn't let air through the way fabric does. The breathable mesh panels are on the sides of the backrest, not the part touching your back. The same Amazon page sells suede and velvet versions. Check their specs separately rather than assuming they match.

Leaning back
The backrest stops at any angle between upright and 135 degrees. Amazon calls that stepless, meaning there are no fixed notches. It doesn't go flat. The footrest pulls out and flips up, with 10 cm of padding under your calves, and the linkage armrests follow the backrest down.
Both pillows are listed as adjustable and come off, and the lumbar one is thickened. Behind them the backrest is 68 cm tall and 56.2 cm across the top.
Watch out for the older spec sheet
SONGMICS's UK page for this black version quotes figures that clash with its own photos, including 70 x 64 x 120 to 128 cm, 20.5 kg and a 10 cm cushion; it looks like text from an earlier version, though SONGMICS hasn't confirmed that. The drawing, the other colours and Amazon's specification all agree on 70 x 70 x 121 to 133 cm and 20.2 kg, which is what we've used. The same old text promises a spare castor and an SGS test to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017, so don't count on the castor, and ask SONGMICS whether the test covers the chair on sale now.
Setting it up
SONGMICS reckons one person can build it in about 30 minutes. Its guide has four steps and labelled parts, and the box holds the chair, a fixings kit and instructions. The gas lift is an auto-return cylinder with a dust cover. SONGMICS doesn't state its class.
SONGMICS adds no warranty of its own, which leaves a faulty chair to the seller and your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Report a fault in the first 30 days and you can ask for your money back. Later on, the seller gets the chance to repair or replace it first.

Should you buy it?
For anyone inside SONGMICS's 165 to 190 cm and 60 to 100 kg range, that tall, deep seat is the reason to buy it, and the stepless recline and footrest suit anyone who likes to lean back in the evening. Measure the gap under your desk as well, because the fixed armrests are the part most likely to get in the way. Under 165 cm, the 53 cm starting height is likely to be too high. Amazon shoppers give it ★★★★☆ (4.1) from 703 ratings.

Frequently asked
6 questions01Is the SONGMICS gaming chair with footrest suitable for short people?+
Usually not. Its lowest seat setting is 53 cm and SONGMICS recommends it from 165 cm up. If the floor to the back of your knee measures under 53 cm, your feet won't sit flat.
02How much weight can it take?+
It has a 150 kg maximum load, but SONGMICS recommends it for users between 60 and 100 kg, and that's the better guide to fit.
03Does it recline flat?+
No. The backrest stops anywhere up to 135 degrees, and the footrest pulls out and flips up to hold your legs.
04Will the faux leather get hot?+
It can. Air doesn't pass through PU, and although the backrest has mesh side panels, the parts you sit against are leatherette. The same Amazon page also sells suede and velvet versions, which are worth comparing if heat bothers you.
05How long does it take to build?+
SONGMICS estimates about 30 minutes for one person, following a four-step guide with labelled parts.
06Can the BIFMA testing be checked?+
Not for the chair on sale now. SONGMICS quotes an SGS test to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017, but in text that seems to belong to an earlier version, so ask SONGMICS whether it covers the OBG077B11.
