Troubleshooting: When You Can't Access UK Netflix
Even with the best VPN, you'll occasionally hit snags. Here's how to fix the most common issues when trying to access UK Netflix from anywhere.
Netflix Proxy Error Message
This is the classic problem. You connect to your VPN, open Netflix, and get: "You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy."
First solution: Switch to a different UK server. Netflix blocks specific IP addresses, not entire VPN services. Your VPN provider has dozens or hundreds of UK servers. Try another one.
In NordVPN, just click the three dots next to United Kingdom and manually select a different server. Usually works within two or three attempts.
Second solution: Clear your browser cache and cookies again. Sometimes Netflix is reading old location data.
Third solution: Try a different browser or use incognito mode. Fresh browser session, fresh start.
Fourth solution: Contact your VPN's support team. NordVPN's 24/7 chat support can tell you which specific UK servers are currently working best with Netflix.
Slow Streaming or Buffering
If your stream keeps buffering or the quality is poor, it's usually a speed issue.
First, check your base internet speed without the VPN. Go to a speed test site and run a test. You need at least 25 Mbps for HD streaming and 50 Mbps for 4K.
If your base speed is fine, the VPN connection might be the bottleneck. Try these fixes:
Switch to a different UK server. Some servers get congested during peak hours. A less busy server will give you better speeds.
Use a wired connection instead of WiFi if possible. WiFi adds latency and can cause speed drops.
Close other applications using bandwidth. Torrent clients, cloud backups, and other streaming services all compete for bandwidth.
Try a different VPN protocol. NordVPN offers multiple protocols, NordLynx (their WireGuard implementation) is typically fastest for streaming.
💡 Pro Tip: Connect to UK servers geographically closer to your actual location when possible. A London server will be faster from Paris than from Sydney simply due to physical distance.
VPN Connected But Still Seeing Wrong Netflix Library
You're connected to a UK server, but Netflix still shows your local library. Annoying, but fixable.
The issue is almost always cached data. Netflix is reading stored location information instead of your current IP address.
Solution one: Clear all browser data. Not just cookies, everything. Cache, cookies, site data, the works.
Solution two: Use a completely different browser. If you normally use Chrome, try Firefox or Safari.
Solution three: Use the Netflix app instead of the browser, or vice versa. Sometimes one works when the other doesn't.
Solution four: Restart your device. Sounds basic, but it forces everything to refresh, including network settings and cached data.
Netflix Working on Computer But Not Mobile
This happens because mobile devices often use GPS location data in addition to IP addresses.
On iOS: Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Find Netflix and set it to "Never." This prevents Netflix from using GPS to determine your location.
On Android: Settings > Apps > Netflix > Permissions > Location. Disable location access.
Then make sure your VPN is actually running on your mobile device (sounds obvious, but people forget). Connect to a UK server, clear the Netflix app cache, and try again.
