Can you watch ITVX abroad? What ITV allows when you travel

ITV's overseas-viewing help says that ITVX and Premium streaming are available in the UK because of their licences. Premium subscribers can download eligible programmes in the UK through the Android or iOS mobile app and watch them offline abroad. ITV says a download made in the UK stays available for up to 7 days and that downloads are limited to the mobile versions of ITVX, so prepare them close to departure and check the expiry shown in the app.

Premium is therefore useful for travel in a specific way. It provides an offline route for eligible shows; it does not turn the whole streaming catalogue into an international service. Downloads also need space on the phone or tablet and are subject to programme availability.

The distinction matters for live television. A downloaded episode can cover an evening on holiday, but it cannot provide an event that has not happened yet. If live viewing is essential, look for an authorised local broadcaster or service carrying that programme.

Why does ITVX block VPNs?

Web services see the public IP address from which a connection arrives. A VPN routes traffic through a server, so the exit server's address can replace your ordinary public address for that traffic. A UK exit server can therefore make the connection appear to come from the UK.

ITVX can also identify VPN addresses and reject them. The technical ability to choose a country and the service's willingness to accept that connection are separate questions. A provider's UK server list is not a list of addresses ITV has approved.

The service rules matter too. ITVX's terms limit the service to the United Kingdom, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, prohibit attempts to get around its geo-blocking and allow ITV to suspend or ban a user who does not comply.
