Geo-Blocking

Geo-blocking restricts access to online content based on a user's physical location, determined via IP address or GPS data. Websites and services use it to enforce licensing agreements, comply with laws, or manage regional availability.

Also known as: geo-blocking, geoblocking, geographic blocking, IP blocking

Geo-blocking is a technique that prevents users in specific countries or regions from accessing websites, apps, or services. The system identifies your location by checking your IP address (the unique identifier assigned to your internet connection) or, on mobile devices, your GPS coordinates. Once identified, your request either gets blocked entirely or redirected to a region-specific version of the service.

Why it happens. Content providers use geo-blocking for several legitimate reasons. Streaming services like Netflix hold different broadcasting rights in different countries, so they must legally restrict films and TV shows to approved regions. Sports broadcasters similarly purchase exclusive territorial rights. Retailers geo-block to manage stock allocation and pricing strategies across markets. Some governments mandate geo-blocking to enforce local regulations.

Common frustrations. The technology catches many users off guard when travelling abroad. You might find your favourite UK streaming service inaccessible in Europe, or discover that a product page shows "not available in your region". Occasionally, geo-blocking errors incorrectly identify your location, blocking access even when you're authorised.

Bypassing geo-blocking. Virtual private networks (VPNs) mask your real IP address by routing traffic through servers in other countries. Proxy services work similarly. However, using these tools to bypass geo-blocking may violate terms of service and could breach local laws depending on your location and what you're accessing.

For tech buyers, understanding geo-blocking matters because it affects which products, services, and content you can actually use based on where you live or travel. Check regional availability before purchasing subscriptions or software with geographical restrictions.
