Surfshark publishes nothing on Sky Go, and Top10VPN (last tested September 2026) recommends it for Sky Go on Android but reports that not every UK server got through.
Can you watch Sky Go abroad? Not by streaming, if your Sky account is a UK one. Sky's help page on viewing abroad puts it plainly: "You're not entitled to stream Sky outside the UK using Sky apps." That covers the EU as well, because the cross-border rules stopped applying to UK accounts when the UK left, so a fortnight in Spain is treated the same as one in Florida.
What does work, and is allowed, is downloading. In the Sky Go app you can save programmes and films over Wi-Fi before you leave, then watch them offline abroad with no Wi-Fi or mobile data. Live channels and live sport cannot be saved ahead, so they are the gap. Customers with an Irish Sky account have more room: Sky lets them stream in many European countries for up to 30 days at a time, though the UK is not on that list.
A VPN can make your connection look as if it starts in the UK. It cannot change what your account is entitled to, and it may not get you in at all: ExpressVPN's own Sky Go page says Sky Go can detect VPN connections and may block them. We hold dated Sky Go records for eight VPN providers, last checked on 5 October 2026. Some third-party tests report success in particular conditions, but the records also contain conflicts, gaps and seller claims, and no provider currently meets our rule for naming one. So this page does not name a best VPN for Sky Go, and nothing on it should be read as one.

A UK Sky account. No streaming outside the UK, in the EU or anywhere else. Sky's page lists what you can still use while travelling in the EU (Sky News, Sky Sports Score Centre and Sky Store) and what you cannot (Sky Go, Sky Sports and Sky Box Office). Downloads made before you go are the exception, because they play offline.
Sky Stream and Sky Glass. Sky says the Stream puck was designed to be used only at the subscription address, and that you won't be able to view content outside the UK with it, so packing the puck for a villa does not get round the rule. Glass and Stream customers use their own version of the phone and laptop app, called Sky Go (Glass/Stream), and the same download route applies to it.
An Irish Sky account. Sky allows streaming on Sky Go, Sky Sports and Sky Kids in the European countries on its list for up to 30 days at a time. Spain, France, Portugal, Italy and Greece are on that list; the UK is not, and has not been since 1 January 2021. If you have been watching abroad for more than 30 days, Sky asks you to watch again in Ireland to confirm you still live there before it restores access.

Sky's Sky Go page says UK customers can download programmes before travelling and then watch them anywhere without Wi-Fi or mobile data. The app runs on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows and Mac. Use the version that matches your box: Sky Go (Q/+) for Sky Q, Sky Go (Glass/Stream) for Glass or Stream. Sky says Sky Go (Glass/Stream) is included at no extra cost. Those customers can watch on up to two devices at the same time, or four with Whole Home. Sky Q customers can also move recordings from the box onto a phone or tablet (Sky's Sky Go help pages cover this), which is the easiest way to take a series you have already recorded.
A few habits save disappointment at the other end:
Download at home on your own broadband a day or two before you go, not on airport Wi-Fi with the gate closing.
Check free storage first. A season of a drama in high quality takes a lot of space on a phone, and the download simply stops when the space runs out.
Play the first few seconds of each download before you leave. If something did not save properly, you find out at home rather than in the hotel.
Check each title in the app before you rely on it.
On an iPhone or iPad the steps are the same: download in the Sky Go app at home, then watch offline abroad. Because playback is offline, it uses none of your roaming data, which matters if your mobile plan charges abroad.

Sometimes, and not reliably. A VPN sends your traffic through a server in another country, so a site sees that server's address rather than yours. With a UK server, Sky Go sees a UK address. Whether it then plays depends partly on whether Sky Go treats that address as a VPN, and Sky does not publish which addresses it refuses. ExpressVPN's page puts a name to the failure: error PFE 4002.
That is why reports conflict. The same provider can work on one server and fail on the next, work in a phone app and not on a laptop, or work this month and not next. A stream that starts can also stop when the address is refused partway through. None of that is something a review, ours included, can promise for the day you travel.
There is also the entitlement point. Even when a stream plays through a VPN, Sky says a UK account is not entitled to stream abroad. That is a separate question from whether using a VPN is legal, which in the UK it is.

Not one we can name today. To recommend a provider for Sky Go, we would need a record that meets our rule for naming one, including recent independent evidence within our 45-day re-check window. Seller claims don't count: a provider saying its product works with Sky Go is a sales statement, not evidence.

Plenty of people already have a VPN for other reasons, and trying it costs nothing extra. Make sure the app installs and connects on the device you are taking before you go; whether Sky Go plays can only be tested once you are abroad.
Connect to a UK server before you open Sky Go, and stay on that one server for the session.
Note the date, the device and whether the stream started and held. If it fails, one switch to another UK server is a fair second try; endless hopping rarely tells you anything.
Have the downloads ready anyway, so a failed stream costs you nothing.
If you are thinking of buying a VPN mainly for Sky Go, don't. Buy one, if at all, for the things it can actually promise, such as privacy on hotel Wi-Fi, and treat Sky Go as something that may or may not play. If you do subscribe, use the refund window. Live sport is where the download route runs out, because a match cannot be saved before it is played. Sky Sports inside Sky Go follows the same rule as the rest of Sky Go: no streaming abroad on a UK account.
NOW is no different. NOW's help page says you can't take a NOW Membership with you outside the UK, and that the EU arrangement ended on 29 December 2020. NOW also lets you download shows and films before you travel and watch them offline abroad, and it streams as normal in Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, the Scottish Islands and the Isle of Man.
For a live fixture abroad, the dependable route is the broadcaster that holds the rights where you are staying. Its channel or app carries the match locally, often in a bar or on the hotel television, usually with local commentary. A VPN does one job well regardless of Sky: it protects your traffic on networks you don't control, such as hotel, café and airport Wi-Fi. For that job, the checkable features matter. A kill switch stops traffic if the tunnel drops instead of falling back to the open network. DNS leak protection keeps your lookups inside the tunnel. An independent audit of a no-logs claim is better evidence than the claim alone.
Here is what the same four providers say about themselves on those points, alphabetically and as read on 5 October 2026. Astrill lists its own OpenWeb and StealthVPN protocols alongside WireGuard. Nord Security says Deloitte Audit Lithuania reviewed NordVPN's no-logs claims at the end of 2024, the fifth such assessment. Proton says it is based in Switzerland, that all its VPN apps are open source, and that its no-logs policy has passed a fifth consecutive annual audit by Securitum. PureVPN describes an "always-on" audit arrangement in which the auditor can check without notice. None of this says anything about Sky Go.
Free VPNs need the most care. They have to be paid for somehow, and they usually limit locations, devices or data. Proton's free plan, for instance, picks servers from a list of ten countries that does not include the UK, so it cannot give you a UK address at all.
