Your Mac felt quick when you bought it. Now it groans opening a browser tab. That's not inevitable, and you almost certainly don't need to buy a new one. The fixes below are ordered from quickest-to-try to more involved, so start at the top and stop when it feels fast again.
Open Activity Monitor and find what's eating your CPU and RAM
Before you change anything, spend two minutes in Activity Monitor. It shows you exactly which apps and processes are consuming the most CPU and memory right now, so you're fixing the actual problem rather than guessing. One rogue process can explain everything.
- Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, or just type it into Spotlight.
- Click the CPU tab and tap the % CPU column header to sort descending. The worst offenders float to the top.
- Switch to the Memory tab and sort by Memory to find RAM hogs.
- If you see an app you don't need right now, select it and click the X button in the toolbar to quit it.
Watch out for
- Don't force-quit something just because it sounds unfamiliar. Search the process name first; many are legitimate macOS services.
- Temporary CPU spikes during Spotlight indexing or Time Machine backups are completely normal and will settle down on their own.
Cut your login items down to only what you actually need
Every app that launches at login is consuming CPU and RAM before you've even opened a browser tab. Most people accumulate a long list of these over time and never revisit it. Trimming it is one of the fastest, most durable speed improvements you can make.
- Go to System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
- Select anything you don't need the moment your Mac starts and click the minus button to remove it.
- Scroll down to Allow in the Background and disable items you don't recognise or actively use.
- Restart your Mac to confirm the improvement.
Watch out for
- Cloud sync apps like Dropbox or OneDrive are supposed to launch at login. Remove only what you genuinely don't need running.
- Some apps quietly re-add themselves after an update. Check this list every few months.
Free up disk space and let macOS Optimise Storage do the heavy lifting
macOS uses free disk space to create the swap files and temporary files it needs to function. When your drive is nearly full, the system slows dramatically. Apple's built-in Optimise Storage tools can reclaim gigabytes automatically, without you manually hunting through folders.
- Go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage to see what's using space.
- Delete large files, old downloads, and apps you no longer use, then empty the Trash so space is actually reclaimed.
- Turn on Optimise Storage and Store in iCloud for the categories that suit you. macOS will automatically offload files you haven't used recently.
- Enable Empty Trash Automatically so items older than 30 days are removed without any action from you.
Watch out for
- Files offloaded to iCloud show a download icon and need an internet connection to open. Fine on broadband; annoying on a train.
- Keep at least 10 to 15 percent of your total disk capacity free at all times. That buffer matters.
Clear your browser cache in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox
A bloated browser cache slows page rendering and can cause websites to behave oddly. Clearing it takes under a minute and can noticeably speed up browsing. The exact steps differ by browser, but they all live in roughly the same place.
- Safari: go to Safari > Clear History and choose your time range. For the cache specifically, enable the Develop menu in Safari Settings > Advanced, then choose Develop > Empty Caches.
- Chrome: open Settings > Privacy and Security > Clear Browsing Data, tick Cached images and files plus Cookies, pick your time range, and click Clear Data.
- Firefox: open Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Clear Data, tick both options and confirm.
Watch out for
- Clearing cookies will sign you out of most websites. Budget a couple of minutes to log back in to your usual ones.
- In Safari, clearing history does not clear the cache. You need the Develop menu step separately for a full clean.
Delete bloated system and app cache files from ~/Library/Caches
Apps build up cache files over time and some of them grow to several gigabytes. Corrupted caches can also cause slow launches and odd behaviour. Clearing them manually takes five minutes and forces apps to rebuild fresh, lean versions.
- Quit all open applications first.
- In Finder, press Shift-Command-G and type
~/Library/Caches, then press Return. - Look through the folder sizes. Delete the contents of cache folders belonging to apps you recognise, but don't delete the folders themselves.
- Empty the Trash and restart your Mac so apps rebuild clean caches from scratch.
Watch out for
- Don't delete entire folders or anything belonging to system processes you don't recognise. Stick to apps you know.
- Some apps store preference or login data in their cache folder. Deleting it may reset settings or require re-login.
Reduce Transparency and Motion in Accessibility settings
Those frosted-glass effects and window animations look nice, but they cost GPU resources. On older or lower-spec Macs, disabling them produces a genuinely snappier feel. Two toggles, done in thirty seconds.
- Open System Settings > Accessibility > Display.
- Turn on Reduce Motion to minimise window animations.
- Turn on Reduce Transparency to replace frosted-glass effects with solid colours.
- Optionally open System Settings > Desktop & Dock and turn off Dock magnification to reduce animation overhead.
Watch out for
- The visual change is noticeable. This is a deliberate trade-off between looks and speed.
- On Apple Silicon Macs with capable GPUs, the performance gain is smaller. Still doesn't hurt to try.
Watch Memory Pressure and reduce how many apps run at once
When your Mac runs out of physical RAM it starts swapping to disk, which is dramatically slower, especially on older machines with spinning hard drives. The Memory Pressure graph in Activity Monitor tells you immediately whether this is happening to you.
- Open Activity Monitor > Memory tab and look at the Memory Pressure graph at the bottom.
- Green means you're fine. Orange or red means macOS is under memory stress and performance will suffer.
- Check the Swap Used figure. Persistent swap usage means you need to run fewer concurrent apps.
- Quit apps and unused browser tabs you don't need right now. Every closed tab helps.
Watch out for
- Apple Silicon Macs share RAM between CPU and GPU and manage it very efficiently. Some swap usage is normal on those machines.
- RAM is not upgradeable on most Macs made after 2019. Reducing concurrent load is your main lever.
Restart your Mac regularly and reset NVRAM or SMC for persistent sluggishness
Leaving a Mac running for weeks lets memory leaks and stale processes accumulate. A simple restart clears them. If sluggishness persists even after a fresh boot, resetting NVRAM or the SMC on Intel Macs can resolve firmware-level issues that no amount of app-quitting will fix.
- Restart via Apple menu > Restart at least once a week. Simple, but genuinely effective.
- To reset NVRAM on an Intel Mac: shut down, power on, and immediately hold Option-Command-P-R for 20 seconds.
- To reset SMC on an Intel MacBook with a built-in battery: shut down, hold Shift-Control-Option plus the power button for 10 seconds, release all keys, then power on.
- Apple Silicon Macs don't have an SMC to reset. Just shut down fully, wait 30 seconds, and restart.
Watch out for
- NVRAM reset clears your display resolution, startup disk, and time zone settings. Reconfigure them after the reset.
- These steps work differently (or not at all) on Apple Silicon. Check which chip your Mac has in Apple menu > About This Mac first.
Scan for malware and remove any software you didn't intentionally install
Adware, browser hijackers, and crypto-mining malware run silently in the background, consuming CPU and network resources continuously. If your Mac feels slow and Activity Monitor shows an unfamiliar process pinning CPU, malware is a real possibility and a quick scan takes five minutes.
- In Activity Monitor, look for unfamiliar process names using high CPU continuously. Search any suspicious name before acting.
- Open Safari > Settings > Extensions and remove any extensions you didn't deliberately install.
- Download and run the free version of Malwarebytes for Mac to scan for known threats.
- Remove suspicious apps from the Applications folder and then check Login Items to remove any associated background agents.
Watch out for
- Don't download 'Mac Cleaner' or 'Speed Booster' apps from pop-up ads. Many of them are the malware.
- macOS Gatekeeper and XProtect provide baseline protection, but safe browsing habits matter more than any tool.
Run Disk Utility First Aid and consider an SSD upgrade on older Macs
A failing or struggling hard drive is one of the single biggest causes of Mac slowness, and Disk Utility's First Aid can catch problems before they become catastrophic. On an older Mac still running a spinning hard drive, upgrading to an SSD is the most transformative single change you can make.
- Open Disk Utility from Applications > Utilities, select your startup disk, and click First Aid to check for and repair errors.
- For a more thorough check on the startup volume, boot into macOS Recovery (hold Command-R on Intel, or hold the power button on Apple Silicon) and run First Aid from there.
- If First Aid reports errors it cannot repair, back up immediately with Time Machine and consider professional repair.
- Check System Information to confirm whether your Mac still has a spinning HDD. If it does and the model is user-upgradeable, an SSD swap is a dramatic, cost-effective fix.
Watch out for
- Most Macs from 2013 onwards already shipped with an SSD. Confirm before buying anything.
- A failing drive needs a backup, not just a repair. Run First Aid, but don't let it replace Time Machine.
