USB 3.2

The latest USB standard offering speeds up to 20 Gbps for data transfer. It's faster than USB 3.1 and backwards compatible with older USB devices.

Also known as: usb 3.2 gen 1, usb 3.2 gen 2, usb 3.2 20 gbps, universal serial bus 3.2

USB 3.2 is the current generation of the Universal Serial Bus standard. It defines the fastest data-transfer speeds available in consumer devices, reaching up to 20 gigabits per second (Gbps). This makes it roughly twice as fast as USB 3.1 and ten times faster than USB 3.0.

The standard comes in two variants: USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5 Gbps) and USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), with the newest devices supporting 20 Gbps over a dual-lane connection. You'll find USB 3.2 ports on modern laptops, external hard drives, and high-speed storage devices.

A practical example: copying a large video file (10 GB) to an external drive takes roughly 5 seconds with USB 3.2 Gen 2, compared to 40 seconds with USB 3.0. This speed matters if you work with video, photography, or large datasets regularly.

When buying a device with USB 3.2, check the specific generation (Gen 1, Gen 2, or the newer 20 Gbps variant). All USB 3.2 ports are backwards compatible, so you can plug in older USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 devices. However, speeds will drop to match the older standard. If speed is important for your workflow, choose devices that support at least USB 3.2 Gen 2 and check whether your cable is rated for that speed.
