Sync Pending

A status indicating that data changes exist on a device but haven't yet been transmitted to a cloud service or another connected device. The synchronisation process is queued or in progress.

Also known as: pending sync, waiting to sync, sync in progress, unsynchronised changes

Sync Pending means your device has detected changes (new files, edits, deletions) that need to be uploaded to the cloud or shared across your other devices, but the transfer hasn't completed yet. This status appears in cloud storage apps, email clients, note-taking software, and device management tools.

Why it matters: Understanding this status helps you avoid data loss. If you see Sync Pending and then lose power or close the app, those changes may not save properly to your cloud account. It also explains why a file you just edited doesn't appear on your phone immediately - it's still waiting to sync.

Common scenarios where you'll encounter it:

  • After editing a document in Google Docs or OneDrive before the upload completes
  • When you've added contacts or calendar events to a synced service
  • After creating new folders or uploading files to cloud storage
  • On mobile devices with poor internet connection that queue changes for later

Common gotchas: Don't assume your data is safe once you've made a change. Leave the app open and keep your internet connected until Sync Pending clears. Some apps show this status only briefly or not at all, which can mislead you into thinking data has saved when it hasn't. On slow connections, syncing can take minutes or hours for large files.

What you can do: Check your app's sync status before closing it or shutting down your device. If Sync Pending persists, verify your internet connection and check your account's storage limits - a full cloud account will block new syncs. Some apps let you manually trigger synchronisation rather than waiting for automatic background syncing.
