Spyware

Malicious software that secretly monitors your device activity, captures passwords, browsing habits, and personal data without your knowledge or consent, then sends it to attackers.

Also known as: monitoring software, stalkerware, surveillance malware, information-stealing malware

Spyware is software installed on your device that operates without your permission to collect sensitive information about your behaviour, contacts, financial details, and device usage. Unlike viruses or ransomware, spyware focuses on surveillance rather than destroying data or encrypting files.

Common types include keyloggers that record every keystroke, screen capture tools that photograph your display, and stalkerware that tracks location and messages. Advertisers also use spyware variants to monitor your browsing habits for targeted marketing.

How it spreads: Spyware typically arrives through compromised websites, deceptive downloads disguised as legitimate software, infected email attachments, or as a hidden component bundled with free applications. Some enters devices through exposed security vulnerabilities.

Why it matters: Spyware can lead to identity theft, fraud, financial loss, and privacy violations. It consumes system resources, slowing your device considerably. Discovering spyware on a partner's phone raises serious legal and safety concerns.

What you can do:

  • Install reputable antivirus or anti-malware software and keep it updated
  • Download software only from official sources or app stores
  • Avoid clicking suspicious links in emails or messages
  • Enable automatic security updates on your device
  • Use a password manager to prevent keylogger theft
  • Regularly check installed applications and remove unfamiliar ones
  • Be cautious when granting app permissions, especially location access

If you suspect spyware, run a full system scan with trusted anti-malware tools, change all passwords from a clean device, and consider a factory reset as a last resort.
