MiFi Device

A portable wireless device that creates a personal mobile hotspot by connecting to mobile networks and broadcasting Wi-Fi to nearby devices, allowing internet access without fixed broadband.

Also known as: mobile hotspot device, portable Wi-Fi router, personal hotspot, MiFi router

A MiFi device is a pocket-sized router that combines a mobile modem and Wi-Fi broadcaster in one unit. It connects to your mobile network operator's 4G or 5G signal, then shares that internet connection with up to 10-15 other devices via Wi-Fi. Common brands include Netgear, Huawei, and Inseego.

MiFi devices are useful when you need internet on the move: during travel, at outdoor events, in rural areas with no fixed broadband, or as backup when your home connection fails. They require a SIM card and mobile contract or pay-as-you-go plan, similar to a smartphone.

Key considerations when buying:

  • Battery life typically ranges from 6 to 20 hours depending on usage and model
  • Check network compatibility with your mobile operator's 4G or 5G bands
  • Data allowances are crucial: streaming video drains allowances quickly
  • Connection speed depends on your location's signal quality and network congestion
  • Some models support dual SIM for switching between networks
  • Weight and size matter if you carry it daily

MiFi devices work differently from tethering via a smartphone, which drains your phone battery and limits the number of connected devices. They also differ from fixed broadband routers: MiFi relies on mobile networks rather than fixed infrastructure.

Common gotchas include overage charges if you exceed your data limit, slower speeds during peak hours, and poor performance in areas with weak mobile coverage. Always check whether your chosen network operator offers MiFi compatibility before purchasing.
