iCloud

Apple's cloud storage and synchronisation service that stores photos, documents, emails, and device backups across your Apple devices and the web.

Also known as: iCloud Drive, iCloud Backup, iCloud+, Apple cloud storage

iCloud is Apple's cloud platform that automatically syncs data across iPhones, iPads, Macs, and the web. It stores your files, photos, contacts, calendars, reminders, and device backups on Apple's servers, making them accessible from any of your Apple devices or through iCloud.com.

What it does:

  • Backs up your iPhone or iPad automatically when plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi
  • Syncs photos, documents, contacts, and calendars in real-time across devices
  • Stores files through iCloud Drive, similar to Google Drive or Dropbox
  • Enables device location tracking and remote wipe through Find My iPhone
  • Secures your data with end-to-end encryption for certain services like iCloud Keychain

Storage and costs:Every Apple ID gets 5GB free storage. Additional storage requires a paid subscription starting at modest monthly rates for 50GB, 200GB, or 2TB tiers.

Key considerations:iCloud is tightly integrated with Apple's ecosystem, so it works best if you own multiple Apple devices. Not all iCloud data is end-to-end encrypted by default - only Keychain, Health data, and some other sensitive information. Your email, photos, and documents use standard encryption instead. If you need cross-platform access or prefer open standards, alternatives like Google Drive or Nextcloud may suit you better.

iCloud+ (paid tier) adds private email relay, expanded storage, and HomeKit Secure Video features.
