Firmware

Low-level software built into hardware that controls how a device works. Firmware updates fix bugs and add features without replacing the device.

Also known as: firmware update, device firmware, embedded software, firmware version

Firmware is software written directly into a device's memory chip. It acts as a bridge between the hardware and higher-level software, controlling how the device operates at its most basic level.

Unlike applications you download and install, firmware is permanent (or semi-permanent) and runs automatically when the device powers on. It manages everything the hardware does: processing instructions, managing power, communicating with other devices, and enforcing security rules. Your router, smart TV, printer, webcam, and even your kettle all contain firmware.

Manufacturers occasionally release firmware updates to fix security holes, improve performance, or add new features. For example, a router update might improve Wi-Fi range, or a printer update might support a new paper size. These updates are usually free and essential for device security.

When buying tech, check whether the manufacturer actively supports and updates firmware for that model. A device with regular updates will stay secure and perform well for longer. Look for products from companies with a track record of releasing patches promptly. If a device is out of support, new vulnerabilities can be dangerous because they cannot be fixed.

Updating firmware is usually straightforward: you download an update file from the manufacturer's website, load it into the device through a settings menu or management tool, and restart. Some devices update automatically over Wi-Fi. Always ensure your power supply is stable during a firmware update, as an interrupted installation can brick (permanently disable) a device.
