DCI-P3 is a colour space, a defined set of colours that a display can reproduce. It was created by the Digital Cinema Initiatives organisation for use in cinema projectors and screens. The space covers a much larger range of colours than the older sRGB standard, which means displays that support it can show more vivid, accurate colours.
The key difference is coverage. An sRGB display covers roughly 35% of the visible colour spectrum, whilst DCI-P3 covers around 53%. This makes DCI-P3 particularly valuable for work that demands colour accuracy, such as photo editing, video grading, and graphic design. It also enhances the viewing experience for films and high-quality video content.
When you see "DCI-P3 coverage" listed on a monitor or TV spec sheet, it's usually expressed as a percentage. A display might advertise "95% DCI-P3" or "100% DCI-P3". The higher the percentage, the more colours it can display within that colour space. A 100% rating means the display reproduces every colour defined by DCI-P3.
If you work with professional media, edit photos, or simply want the best colour reproduction for films and games, check for DCI-P3 support. Creative professionals often prioritise monitors that achieve 95% or higher DCI-P3 coverage. Consumers can benefit too, especially when watching streamed 4K content or playing modern games that take advantage of the wider colour gamut.
