80 Plus Gold is a certification standard for power supplies that measures how efficiently they convert alternating current (AC) from your wall socket into direct current (DC) that your computer uses. A Gold-rated unit converts at least 90% of input power to output power at 50% load, and maintains 87% efficiency at 20% and 100% loads.
The certification scale runs from Bronze (lowest) through Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Titanium (highest). Each tier represents better efficiency and less wasted energy as heat. The "80" in the name refers to an older minimum standard of 80% efficiency that applied across all ratings when the scheme launched.
A real-world example: if you have a 750W Gold-rated supply and draw 500W from your system, the supply consumes roughly 556W from the wall socket. A less efficient Bronze unit might consume 625W for the same output, wasting 69W more as heat.
Gold certification benefits you in several ways. Your electricity bills drop slightly because less power is wasted. Your PC runs cooler since the supply generates less excess heat. The supply also lasts longer, as operating at lower temperatures reduces component stress. Most gaming and productivity builds benefit from Gold or better efficiency.
When comparing power supplies, look for 80 Plus Gold if you want a solid balance between cost and efficiency. Platinum and Titanium units save more on bills over time but cost considerably more upfront. Bronze and Silver units work fine for basic systems or budget builds, but Gold has become the sensible middle ground for most buyers.
