VRR (HDMI)

Variable Refresh Rate technology that syncs a display's refresh rate to a graphics card's output, eliminating screen tearing and stuttering during gaming and video playback.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is a display technology transmitted via HDMI that dynamically adjusts how often your screen refreshes to match the frame rate your graphics card produces. Rather than refreshing at a fixed rate (typically 60Hz), a VRR-capable display changes its refresh rate within a range, usually 48Hz to 120Hz or higher depending on the display.

When your graphics card outputs frames at inconsistent rates, a conventional fixed-refresh display causes screen tearing (horizontal lines across the image) or stuttering (juddering motion). VRR solves this by waiting for the next frame before refreshing, keeping visual output smooth regardless of frame rate fluctuations.

Why it matters: VRR significantly improves the gaming experience, particularly in fast-paced titles where frame rates vary. You'll notice smoother panning, reduced input lag perception, and elimination of visible tearing without performance penalties. It also benefits video streaming and general desktop use when frame rates drop.

Common gotchas: Both your display and graphics card must support VRR via HDMI. Some older displays or budget models lack this feature. Performance improvements depend on your specific hardware; VRR won't make a slow graphics card faster, but it makes what you have look better. HDMI VRR support varies by HDMI version and implementation, so verify compatibility before purchasing.

What you can do: If you own a VRR-capable display and graphics card, enable the feature in your graphics driver settings (AMD or NVIDIA). Test games at various settings to experience the difference. When shopping for displays, check specifically for HDMI VRR support rather than assuming all premium displays include it.
