A dGPU (discrete graphics processing unit) is a dedicated graphics card that sits separately from your computer's main processor. Unlike integrated graphics, which share your system memory and CPU resources, a dGPU has its own memory (VRAM) and processing power devoted entirely to rendering images, videos, and 3D content.
Discrete GPUs are commonly found in gaming laptops, workstations, and desktop machines. They significantly outperform integrated graphics for demanding visual tasks because they don't compete with the CPU for bandwidth or memory. When shopping for a laptop or desktop, check whether it has a dGPU listed in the specs. If you do casual browsing, word processing, and light photo editing, integrated graphics suffice. If you game, stream, edit video, or work with 3D software, a dGPU is worth the extra cost and weight. Pay attention to the GPU model, VRAM capacity (usually 4GB to 24GB), and power requirements, as these directly affect both performance and battery drain.
