DDR5 (Double Data Rate 5) is the fifth generation of dynamic random-access memory (RAM) technology. It succeeds DDR4 and offers approximately double the data bandwidth, with standard speeds starting at 4,800 megahertz (MHz) and climbing higher. DDR5 modules consume less power than their DDR4 counterparts, which helps reduce heat output and extends battery life in laptops.
Key improvements over DDR4 include built-in voltage regulation on each module, which improves stability and allows for easier overclocking for enthusiasts. DDR5 also introduces per-module error correction, making systems more reliable when handling large datasets or running demanding applications.
Real-world impact: if you're editing 4K video, running virtual machines, or playing modern games at high settings, DDR5 can reduce loading times and improve frame consistency compared to DDR4. A typical laptop or desktop with 16GB of DDR5 will feel noticeably more responsive when multitasking or running memory-intensive software.
Compatibility matters: DDR5 requires a motherboard with DDR5 slots (Intel 12th generation Core or newer, AMD Ryzen 7000 series). You cannot use DDR5 modules in older DDR4 slots.
